(Ratibida columnifera) Perennial. A native wildflower named after its sombrero shaped bloom with dark red drooping petals edged in golden yellow. Adaptable but prefers hot and dry areas. For a more dramatic effect, plant in groups or masses.

To Grow:
Direct seed in late fall after first frost or in early spring. Seeds benefit from cold stratification. To cold stratify, mix seeds with moistened seed starting mix or sand and place it in the refrigerator for 3 weeks, then sow seed mixture outdoors in prepared bed after last frost. Cold stratified seeds can also be started indoors 6-8 weeks before last frost. Press seeds into the soil but do not cover them with soil because they need light to germinate. Transplant seedlings outdoors after last frost. Keep moist until established.
