"In the labyrinth of the far-off childhood days, these legends from Fairy Land were to me the history of a very real country. In every flower and leaf, with childhood eyes (so much more far-seeing than our grown-up ones), I could detect the shadows of the elves and fairies that stared in amazement at the imprisonment by poor little idle by the creeping plant. I can remember when being unusually lazy and careless, passing any stray tendrils of Ivy or Virginia creeper with cold tremors of fear, lest the wicked fairy should be lurking in their midst."
"I think that in every little child's heart, there is a Fairy Land."
"Once upon a time in Sheneland, beyond the moon, where the fairies reign, there lived a little old woman whose house was nothing but the hollow trunk of a great Ash-Tree."
"On the borders of Sheneland, there is an enclosed garden, where the sun never shines."
I have always had a deep love for antique books of the Fairy, and this particular book is one of my most beautiful, incredibly illustrated, and enchanted. The works of art it contains are some of the most intricate, stunning, and magical ever to adorn a fairy book. Even though this edition was printed seven years before the First World War of 1914, it still displays incredible details. As stated, this is a scarce book, and I have searched every major book site on the web and have come across zero with this cover and spine offered. This is a magical one... I would snag it before someone else does...
"In my little white bed at night, I think I must have caught the fleeting rays from the moon and stars, and even now, I feel almost sure that "old Women" is weaving the dresses that I wove for the fairies in my dreams."
Legends from Fairy Land" is a book by the English author Holme Lee, whose real name was Harriet Parr. The tales are often infused with fantasy, magic, and enchantment elements, and they explore themes of love, morality, and the supernatural.
Its scarcity and limited availability have made it a rare gem among book collectors and enthusiasts. This particular edition holds a special place in the hearts of fairy tale aficionados due to its unique content, exquisite illustrations, and historical significance.
With its distinctive craftsmanship and attention to detail, the book transports readers to a magical world of enchantment and imagination. Its pages are filled with timeless tales of magic, adventure, and moral lessons, captivating readers of all ages.
One of the book's defining features is its illustrations, which are meticulously hand-drawn by Holme Lee (1828-1900). Each illustration brings the stories to life, showcasing the charm and wonder of the fairy tale realm. The delicate lines and meticulous attention to detail make these illustrations a true work of art.
Despite its rarity, the book's value extends beyond its physical attributes. It represents a piece of literary history, a window into the storytelling traditions of the early 20th century. Owning this book is like connecting to a bygone era, preserving the beauty and magic of classic fairy tales for future generations. The scarcity of this edition adds to its allure and makes it a cherished addition to any book collection.
For those fortunate enough to acquire this elusive book, it becomes a treasured possession, cherished not only for its rarity but also for the joy and wonder it brings. It serves as a reminder of the enduring power of fairy tales to ignite the imagination and transport readers to magical realms far beyond the confines of reality.
The overall condition of this book is very good despite being well over a century in the making. It does contain some expected wear, aging, and reading use that is common with a book of this era. This includes minor marks on the covers and little scratches, and the spine has some rubbing and shelf wear. The interior pages are naturally age-toned. The binding is tight and firm, all the pages are secure, and the cover details are stunning for a book from 1907. One of the pages near the end of the book has a margin repair; however, it's not on any text and has been fixed. The pages are in lovely condition for this age. Overall, regardless of age, it is a beautiful, well-kept, and stunning edition.
Harriet Parr (1828–1900) was an English author of the Victorian era who wrote under the pseudonym Holme Lee. She also wrote stories for children. The daughter of a commercial traveler, Parr was born in the English city of York on 31 January 1828. She never married and worked first as a governess before finding success as a writer with her first book, Maude Talbot, in 1854. From then until 1883, Parr produced about one novel a year, all published by the London firm Smith, Elder & Co., under the pen name Holme Lee. Having enjoyed one of Parr's early books, Charles Dickens bought three stories from her for the Christmas numbers of his weekly magazines. One included a hymn that would later be republished in several Protestant hymnals in Britain and the United States. Parr also wrote several volumes of fairy tales for children and some non-fiction works, most of the latter under her real name. She lived at Shanklin on the Isle of Wight for many years, where she died on 18 February 1900.
Reginald L. Knowles (1879 – 1950) was a book designer and illustrator who worked with his brother, Horace Knowles, on several exquisitely illustrated books in the first two decades of the twentieth century, including Legends from Fairy Land [1](1907), Norse Fairy Tales (1910) and Old World Love-Stories (1913).
While both brothers usually share equal credit, it is understood that most of the color illustrations and detailed monotone images were prepared by Reginald Knowles, who signed "RLK" (e.g., Everyman's Library).
The Knowles brothers' work drew influences from Art Nouveau, Victorian Fantasy, and Gothic Revival imagery.
A decade after their earliest work, Horace Knowles produced a stunning and comprehensive suite of color and monotone illustrations for Peeps into Fairyland (1924).
In later life, Reginald illustrated the angling books of Wilfred Gavin Brown: "My River and Some Other Waters" (1947) and Angler's Almanac: Some Leaves On A River (1949).
He also illustrated the inside cover and title page of the 1933 memorial edition of The Book of Simple Delights by Walter Raymond.
