This statue is twinned with an identical statue in Apeldoorn in the Netherlands. The twin monuments symbolizes the link between Canada and the Netherlands after World War II. During the war, Queen Juliana (then Princess) of the Netherlands and their children lived in Ottawa. She gave birth to her third child in Ottawa's Civic Hospital, with her room being given a unique status as Netherlands territory to keep the child's nationality solely Dutch. In recognition of the Queen's time in Canada during the war, and in recognition of Canada's role in the liberation of the Netherlands, the Queen gave 100,000 tulip bulbs to Ottawa. This was followed by 20,000 tulips every year which continues up to the present.
