Description

This is the second painting in the three painted set done by William Ludwell Sheppard, 1833-1912, Sculptor, Watercolorist and Illustrator. This painting is titled "The Calvaryman". The print is signed on the lower right corner (I believe the signature is printed with the litho and is not original), and was copyrighted in 1903 by William Lowell Sheppard. The litho is glazed, matted and presented in natural wood frame, 3/4" wide, 1/2" thick, the mat is 2 3/4" wide and the frame is 17 1/4" wide x 21 1/4" tall.

Sheppard was a Richmond, Virginia artist and teacher. He enlisted in the Civil War and spent time painting fellow soldiers. He was with the Richmond Howitzers artillery in 1861 in the army of North Virginia and reached the rank of engineering officer. After the war, he was a magizine illustrator and gained attention for designing tobacco labels. He studied in New York City, London and Paris.

The name of this chromo-litho is "Confederate Infantryman" The foot soldier stands, with rifle leaning on his hip, as he fills his pipe. The print is in excellent vintage condition except for minimum wartermarks on the lower right corner mat. (see fourth photo above.)
