I am a big fan of elephants and the aunt that my daughter was named after was also a big fan of elephants so elephants naturally became my daughter's animal. I wanted her to have a treasured friend to always love and remember her mommy by, a knitted elephant.
Then we had a son. His situation wasn't so serendipitous so we had to put more thought into his animal. We eventually settled on the lion and I knit him up a little wool lion to carry around and cuddle with (and throw. The lion, apparently, loves to be flung across rooms).
Now we have another little boy on the way and, this time, my husband insisted on a rhino. So here is my attempt at a knit rhino.
He's plump, but by no means anywhere near obesity. In fact, for a rhino, he's a little under weight. And he's stuffed with beans and polyfil so he can sit up straight while being squishy. Of course, if you'd prefer, I can omit the beans or stuff him with wool, for an all natural rhino.
I can also knit him in more imaginative colors as this yarn spans the spectrum.
He's about six inches from the top of his head to his bottom. His legs are about three inches and his arms are a little over two.
This body shape really appealed to my daughter over other ones I tried. She especially likes to carry her animals around with her hand around their necks. Don't worry, they like this.
The rhino is knitted from wool, so he prefers minimal contact with water. Maybe just for cleaning.
He's a hand wash in cold water and air dry.
Please allow up to, but not necessarily, two weeks for knitting.
