An early antique salt fired stoneware mineral water bottle circa mid 1800s

Hand made in Germany and stamped with maker's mark of a lion and a nice rustic, warm, nutty brown finish with some firing surface variations & tones

Export of mineral water to the United States may have begun as early as 1846, and these bottles lined store shelves with the popular drink

Usually the mineral water was carbonated, which added to its popularity

These bottles look fabulous in groupings with similar bottles, as they each have their own unique qualities and finishes due to the way salt firing effects their surfaces. They make lovely vases for single stems, or just a few flowers...

condition:

In great condition, with a few tiny surface imperfections from the making & firing process. A nice bit of light semi gloss has developed around the shoulder of the bottle, which is a result of some of the salts in the salt firing process reacting with the surface slip
