This drypoint of a Red Admiral Pupa is from a recent batch of work produced for the Devon Guild of Craftsmen looking at butterflies dependant on nettles. Small easy to post works are being listed here on Etsy. Larger studies are available at the Devon Guild’s shop in Bovey Tracey.

The Red Admiral is a frequent visitor to gardens throughout the British Isles and is one of our most well-known butterflies. The primary larval food plant is the common nettle and the pupa hides amongst the stingers. We all love butterflies – BUT – many hate caterpillars and we’re not that fond of stinging nettles. But if you want to see more of our resident population of Red Admirals, “Be Nice to Nettles”.

Each print is hand pulled by me. The printing plate is deliberately not square, after all, nothing in nature is square and I enjoy the quirkiness of slightly random shapes.
The small perspex plate is inked with quality oil-based dark dusky blue intaglio ink and printed with an etching press. The print is signed, titled and numbered in pencil. This is print number 1 from a limited edition of just 8.

This artwork was conceived and created solely as an original fine art print. Unlike a gicleé print or any other computer print out, none of my prints are reproductions of a pre-existing painting or drawing .

I like to use top quality heavy weight paper (this one is Somerset 100% cotton, Velvet, 300gm) so It is best not to roll up prints for posting, especially when the printing process results in a fair amount of embossing. I will therefore only ship my prints flat and protected with card.
