Native Alaskan Made Caribou Skin Child's Mask c. 1960

Description

This wonderful old Native Alaskan folk art piece from about 1960 originated in Barrow, Alaska and was made for the tourist trade in Sitka. Native parents often created these organic items to raise money to help pay the tuition for their children attending the 'Indian School' there in Sitka (this was before the 1965 enactment of the Federal 'Alaska Native Educational Equity, Support, and Assistance Act'). Children's masks such as this example were almost exclusively made for this purpose.

The mask was made by stretching wet caribou hide over a face mold and letting it dry and shrink. Then the details such as the caribou hair eyebrows and fox fur ruff were added.

This exquisite little lifelike piece is 8 inches tall and about 7 inches across. Although 'mask' art is not uncommon, it is unusual to find a child's mask.
