The PATROL or FIELD CAP is a soft, straight-sided fabric cap with a rounded visor and flat top. Versions of this cap have been worn in the U.S. military since at least the 1940s — and since then, it has become a popular casual style as well.

The 18 inch doll (American Girl®-sized) version you can make from this pattern was designed based on a modern-issue Army cap. It looks adorable made in anything from camo prints* and khaki to pretty cottons or tailored twills. Though your doll will love to wear it tipped back on the head at a jaunty angle, he or she might also appreciate the traditional design, in which the raised center back allows the hat to be worn with the top absolutely flat and parallel to the ground – an impressive parade-ground look for any aspiring 18" grunt.

Pattern pieces and directions are included for both the fully-lined cap — and an optional fabric band trim.

This cap is an INTERMEDIATE level pattern, involving curved seams, hand basting and visible top stitching. Lee & Pearl™ have made things as easy as possible, though, and a careful beginner should be able to follow our PHOTO ILLUSTRATED, step-by-step instructions while using our COMPUTER DRAFTED pattern pieces. All Lee & Pearl seam lines get "walked around" on the computer to ensure that the pattern pieces fit together perfectly. Perfect matches = no puckered curves, ever!

*NOTE: The 1:4 scale replica digital camo fabric shown in our photos can be purchased in the Lee & Pearl shop at Spoonflower: http://www.spoonflower.com/profiles/lee&pearl.

1/4 yard of light- or medium-weight woven fabric, such as plain weave cotton, twill or denim, or a scrap at least 14" wide x 11" long – or twice that if using the same fabric for the lining.

1/4 yard woven fabric or lining fabric for lining – or a scrap at least 14" wide x 8" long

Lightweight fusible interfacing for brim (keep it lightweight: the curved shape and decorative stitches will do most of the work supporting the brim)

Matching thread (or contrasting thread as a design choice)

Optional trim: braid, buttons, grosgrain ribbon, patches, iron-ons, ribbon flowers, etc.

Starting in December 2018, that's Lee & Pearl Pattern 1038: The Gift Bow Front Dress for 18 Inch, 16 Inch and 14 1/2 Inch Dolls.

While scouting the fashion pages and runway reports for inspiration, our pattern designer was struck by one of the prettiest trends we’ve seen in a long time. You’ve probably noticed it too — all those soft ruffles and gathers, interesting pleats and seams, bows and motifs formed out of the fabric of the dress itself. It’s an organic kind of ornamentation, that allows over-the-top frills while still retaining the elegant restraint of a vintage couture gown.

Our Bow Front Dress explores this lovely trend with pleated raglan sleeves, a draped front panel and inverted center front pleats that mimic the look of a tied ribbon bow. Best of all, we designed this dress to be made from a single quarter yard or fat quarter of ordinary woven fabric — a dress designed around the use of pretty fabrics should allow you to use a wide variety of pretty fabrics!

This turned out wonderful!!!! I quilt, so "sewing" isn't my strong suit, but I loved it. I enlarged the pattern to 155% so I could use these on my memory bears!

This is adorable and a perfect fit! I love this pattern. I just made my first hat from this pattern and it is a perfect fit. The pattern went together so easily and the directions were clear and detailed. Thank you, this is one of my favorites!

This is the best fitting hat pattern I have found for the 18-inch doll. I did this in a gray wool and kind of scrunched the front of the hat down onto the brim and got a nice Johnny Reb look. Very fast downloading and lots of good instruction. You can't go wrong with this pattern.
