OUR ROSIE THE RIVETER TOUCHSTONE COLLECTION includes three reminders of what Rosie means to subsequent generations of women.
¶ Rivets = STRENGTH to stand on her own two feet and push the envelope and achieve more than thought possible
¶ Steel Penny = RESILIENCE to bend (never break) and always find a new path forward
¶ Ration Token = EMPOWERMENT to find creative new ways to resolve any potential problems
Give this Rosie Touchstone Collection to a ROSIE THE RIVETER FAN (or a Rosie in the making). She'll add this Rosie Touchstone Collection to her pocket or purse or keep it on her desk. Whenever she needs a reminder of the strength of women or an inspiration after a difficult day, she'll reach for these touchstones and find the inspiration she needs. (Besides, these are just plain FUN to have.)
STORY OF THE ROSIE TOUCHSTONE COLLECTION
Can't you just imagine that Rosie might have had a few spare rivets in her pocket? We can too. And that's what started our TOUCHSTONE COLLECTION. Once we found a source of rivets, we bought them in several sizes and put them in a red-and-white polka dot bag.
AND since we always research authentic designs and materials, we realized that Rosie would have also had RATION TOKENS and even STEEL PENNIES (only made in 1943) in her pocket.
Could we really find these actual items? The answer is "yes". Once everything was in hand, we loved just touching the rivets, the token, and the penny. We even imagined that we were touching items that Rosies and the other women of the home front had touched during WWII.
They became touchstones to us -- links to strength, resilience, and empowerment. And our ROSIE TOUCHSTONE COLLECTION was born.
HISTORICAL INFORMATION ON TOKEN, PENNY, RIVETS
• RATION TOKEN: The Office of Price Administration used OPA stamps, coins and chits for rationing. OPAs, as they were sometimes called, were used by stores to give change for food bought with ration stamps. Most people viewed the rationing as a good challenge to find new and creative ways to prepare nutritious meals -- creative ways to solve the restriction.
The red tokens, like this one, were given as change for meats and fats. OPAs were first issued in 1944 and stopped being issued in 1945.
The ration token is vulcanized fiber (celluloid) and .63 inches (16mm) in size.
You can see why in our TOUCHSTONE COLLECTION, the ration token stands for EMPOWERMENT.
• STEEL PENNY (STEELIE): Military demands for copper used in ammunition and military equipment meant that the US Mint had to reduce their dependence on that material. By early 1943, the Mint, after a number of experiments, began making a one-cent coin from 99% steel with a thin zinc coating.
Why just the year 1943? It turns out that the galvanization process didn't cover the edges of the coins, and sweat quickly began to rust the metal. After public outcry, the Mint found a way to salvage brass shell casings that they augmented with pure copper to produce an alloy close to the 1941–42 penny composition. This was used for 1944–46-dated cents, after which the prewar composition was resumed. Although the 1943 steelies continued to circulate into the 1960s, the Mint collected large numbers of the 1943 pennies and destroyed them.
You can see why in our TOUCHSTONE COLLECTION, the steel penny stands for RESILIENCE.
• RIVETS: Rosie worked hard. She worked bucking rivets to secure the metal plates and panels on airplanes, ships and other essential equipment used to win World War II. It was a tough job but she did it with speed and accuracy. JUST HOW IMPORTANT WERE THE RIVETS?
Henry Ford, at his Willow Run factory, received the first order for The Liberator, the famous B24 bomber, in March of 1942. Each Liberator Bomber required 700,000 rivets. YES, 700,000 RIVETS. Eventually, Rosies at several factories put 12,600,000,000 rivets in 18,000 B-24s.
You can see why in our TOUCHSTONE COLLECTION, the rivet stands for STRENGTH.

So much fun to have these touchstones! I have a Jeep Jk done up with Rosie and the B24 liberator. I purchased this to hang on my rear view mirror as good luck charms. Great touch to my rig!
Loved this so much! Went well with my costume!
Just opened my Rosie pkg!! Everything is just great—the coin, the token and the rivets in a cute little bag, and an awesome keychain with a rivet and a little fabric Rosie. My granddaughter (11) dressed up as Rosie for Halloween—can’t wait to give her these!! Yes, we CAN do it—pass it on!!!!
This is sooo great! Very handy for Rosie the Riveter day!!! I added some Japanese coins my great uncle Ernest brought back from WW2. It is interesting conversation starter. :-)
