My designs are letterpress printed in France. In the era of digital printing and printing in 24 hrs, letterpress printing, has made a very successful comeback and a rebirth in popularity to print fine art and stationery. It’s a great choice when you have something memorable to come and it makes the happiness of the amateurs of design and beautiful papers.
Letterpress is a technique of relief printing using a printing press (typesetting, engraving, photopolymer plate, ...) pressed against the paper like a stamp.
What makes the letterpress impression unique is the relief more or less marked on the paper that the plate will create thanks to the pressure generated by the press force. This relief creates shadows on the documents that can also be felt while gently touching the paper.
The colors are obtained with the Pantone system which allows to have the broadest range of pure colors, which means that they are created before printing contrary to the four color process where the colors are created from the three colors primary, plus black, printed one by one, which can give uncertainty about the rendering. For digital printing, the result depends on the quality of the computer and printer settings: color profiles, screen calibration with spectrometer, calibration. The powder inks are baked and deposited on the surface of the paper. This often leaves a lustrous finish.
Letterpress printing is the most artistic printing system (in large quantities). It requires know-how that is passed on from word to mouth because the machines are no longer manufactured and are passed on from passionate to passionate. The inks are mixed by hand, each color is printed separately and requires many adjustments to achieve the perfect result.
The cards were printed on an old semi-automatic platen press from 1960 in France.
