In the spring, my husband and I spotted a robin chasing a squirrel around our back yard. We thought that was weird bird behavior. I mean, she was literally attacking the poor squirrel, seemingly on a warpath with it. Hopping mad, we thought. When we discovered this robin's nest underneath our back deck a couple of days later, we had an Aha! moment. The livid robin mama was simply protecting her babies from a potential predator. Not hopping mad, after all. The baby birds were on the alert when I approached with my camera. They looked a little cramped and a couple of days later the nest was empty.
