The subject was inspired by the ancient Sicilian town of Taormina, Italy; the style was inspired by traditional quilting techniques long practiced by women in the States: the blocking patterns of the traditional patchwork quilts of the Plains States, the idiosyncratic irregularity of the crazy-quilt, and the geometrically placed remnant-strips technique traditional to the African American women of Gee's Bend, Alabama. In this painting, then, the predominantly male Italian tradition of building construction meets the predominantly female North American tradition of quilt-making.

Acrylic paint on custom-built gallery-wrapped canvas with a built-in mounting bracket. Gallery-wrapped canvases are not typically framed, so this painting is ready to hang.
