This breathtaking impending storm photo is a reminder to always look for the silver lining, even in the darkest of days.

In September, 2020, I was researching locations for an article I was writing for Distinctly Montana Magazine on "The Landscapes of Norman Maclean." Maclean, as you may know, was the author of A River Runs Through It, the autobiographical story of his early years in western Montana. The story, made into a movie starring Brad Pitt and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, tells how fly-fishing was built into the theology of Maclean's father, the minister of First Presbyterian Church in Missoula, Montana. RIVER is the most famous of Maclean's works, but not his only piece of writing. My reseach took me all over western Montana, on both sides of the Continental Divide.

One of three stories published in RIVER is "USFS 1919: The Ranger, the Cook, and a Hole in the Sky" which tells of Macleans adventures working for the Forest Service on the Idaho side of the Bitterroot Mountains in, surprise, 1919. Getting to town required a 35 mile hike through the mountains, reaching the Bitterroot Valley through Blodgett Canyon. Of course I wanted to photograph the canyon.

Just as in 1919, there is a trail through the canyon, but it is a steep and narrow canyon, and I feared I would not be able to get a decent shot--one that would do justice to the majesty of this cut through the rocks. There is an alternative trail a few miles south, that leads to an overlook. I decided for that approach. The visitmt.com webpage for the trail says this: " The hike is fairly easy and provides an excellent view of Blodgett Canyon and looks into the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness." It notes that the trail is 3 miles long and is suitable for all comers. If only that were true.

In September 2020 I was approaching my 71st birthday. I had been living a relatively sedentary life, and was not prepared for an "fairly easy" hike. Especially not when carrying my camera, lens, tripod, and backpack camera bag. I doubt that I made it halfway before deciding that no photo was worth a heart attack. After a long rest by the side of the trail, I turned back returning to the safety of my car. I can't complain, though. This view, taken on the way back to Hamilton, made the trip worthwhile.
