Choose an elegant pair of dangling teardrop earrings handcrafted in Mexico during the 1980s. These striking pieces feature an iconic mosaic design with vibrant, organic panels of iridescent natural abalone shell inlay set securely against a glossy black resin background. The frames are made from alpaca silver, a highly durable alloy prized for its bright, white-silver gleam and longevity. Unlike similar vintage earring listings that show decades of wear, heavy pocket scratches, or dull lacquer, these earrings have a beautiful heft, pristine metal surfaces, and brilliant, unclouded shell luster. They are genuine vintage New Old Stock (NOS) from our family's wholesale inventory and have never been worn or sold at retail.

DETAILS
Material: Natural Abalone Shell, Black Resin Background
Metal: Alpaca Silver (Stamped "ALPACA" and "MEXICO" on the reverse)
Design: Teardrop Drop Dangles with Abstract Organic Shell Inlay
Earring Length: 1 3/4 inches long (excluding the ear wires)
Earring Width: 3/4 inch wide at the widest point
Backing Style: French Hook Backs

Condition: Excellent vintage New Old Stock (NOS) condition; never worn. Note: There is a tiny, minor surface variation on the edge of the abalone shell inlay that occurred during original hand-bench production, which is typical of authentic mid-century regional craftsmanship and does not impact structural integrity.

THE MATERIAL

Abalone Shell: Displays a high-intensity natural iridescence, shifting through luminous ocean hues of peacock blue, seafoam green, cream, and flashes of soft pink as they catch the light.

Alpaca Silver: A classic regional jewelry alloy composed of copper, nickel, and zinc that delivers a brilliant, high-shine silver finish alongside fantastic daily structural durability.

BACKGROUND / HISTORY / CULTURE

Traditional Mexican Inlay Work: These classic teardrop earrings are a wonderful reflection of late 20th-century Mexican artisanal craft hubs. Independent regional workshops seamlessly married fluid, organic natural elements like hand-cut marine abalone shell with sleek, high-contrast black lacquer matrixes to create bold wearable art.

The Golden Age of Bench Work: These earrings hail from the prominent 1980s Mexican silver-crafting era, a time when pieces were done by hand, giving them a more crisp and “openwork” detail than mass-produced jewelry. Even for pieces intended for broader commercial export using alpaca base metals, the base metal thickness and inlay settings were generally sturdier than the mass-produced jewelry that followed in later decades.

Combined Heritage & Import History: This set is vintage New Old Stock (NOS) from the 1980s and we are the sole owners of this never-worn inventory. From 1969-1974, a family matriarch sent jade, coral and other inventory from Taipei to her daughter in the US for a wholesale and retail business. The retail business closed in 1976, but the wholesale business continued into the early 2000s, expanding to include artisanal global imports like these Mexican pieces. All of our inventory is vintage new old stock from this period, never used.
