Description

The Serengeti is a region of grasslands and woodlands in Mara Region in Tanzania. It has more than 1.6 million herbivores and thousands of predators. Blue wildebeests, gazelles, zebras and buffalos are the animals most commonly found in the region.

What does that have to do with this necklace? Nothing, really. :) But the Serengeti came to mind as I was creating it. And I've always wanted to go there.

SERENGETI has a tribal feel, and features a focal stone and beads of gorgeous black and white Zebra Jasper, beads of lovely, blue-green African Turquoise, and chips of Mahogany Obsidian and Picture Jasper. I added a sweet Sterling Silver spiral drop to the focal stone, and it closes with a simple silver-plated toggle clasp. 20 ½" long, excluding the focal stone.

ABOUT THE STONES ...

AFRICAN TURQUOISE (Jasper) - Protection; Healing; Nurturing

African turquoise is actually not Turquoise, but a beautiful spotted teal Jasper mined in Africa that has a matrix similar to that stone. While some believe that African turquoise jasper can offer protection from accidents during travel, others say it will attract money for the wearer. It is said to help reduce headaches and help the wearer with clearer expression.

All Jasper is strongly connected with the energies of the earth, and helps its wearer find stability and balance. It boosts the immune system and assists in extracting pollutants and toxins from the body. It is said to provide protection against negativity and to align the chakras. Jasper is often used to soothe the stomach and nerves and as a general body tonic. It works slowly and is most effective when used over a long period of time. With patience, anyone using Jasper will feel a continuity of spirit and body that can vastly improve both work and play.

ZEBRA JASPER - Attainment of goals; centering; acceptance

Zebra Jasper encourages us to stop considering failure as an option in life, and to take action towards reaching our dreams and goals. It helps us to escape the perils of over-thinking and promotes the enjoyment of experiencing life as it comes. It also helps to stimulate the transition from the material plane to the astral plane during meditation and centering of the soul.
Physically Zebra Jasper is also said to be helpful with stamina, endurance, bone disorders, osteoporosis, teeth, gums, muscle spasms, and heart palpitations.

PICTURE JASPER - Connecting with Earth’s consciousness; inner journeying to sacred sites and ancient civilizations

Picture Jasper can be used in meditation to merge with the consciousness of the Earth. It is a stone of dream work and visioning. It can help one emotionally reconnect to the energy of the planet and to the ancient knowledge of living in balance that is so necessary at this time. On the physical plane, Picture Jasper supports bone growth and healing.

MAHOGANY OBSIDIAN - Visionary; protection; clearing negativity

Mahogany Obsidian is the result of iron and magnesium being introduced into the formation of cooling lava glass. This mottled black and dark red gemstone is said to mirror back to us our own flaws so we are better able to correct them. It is believed by some to induce visions and dreams which reveal to us our own role in the difficult areas of our lives. Mahogany Obsidian is also considered extremely protective. Wearing this gemstone is thought to improve self-acceptance by removing negative self-talk. It is thought to have special cleansing powers with respect to negativity.

MY PROCESS ...

In creating a necklace, I first select a focal piece, and then choose the various stones to complete it through an instinctive (and fun!) process. After lighting some incense and putting on some music that suits my mood that day (new age, world music, nature sounds, classical or soft jazz), I hold the pendant or focal stone in my hand as I look over ALL of the hundreds of types of stone beads in my collection, and choose several (way more than what will eventually be included - usually 20 or more types) that look and feel "right." Next, I narrow things down by repeating the process among the beads I first selected, and place handfuls of about a dozen different types in the old African Mancala game board I use as my beading palette. I then choose complementary glass seed beads (often used as spacers) and a clasp, and begin beading - entirely by instinct. Often, I will get to a certain point and begin over again, until the necklace that is meant to be reveals itself. Sometimes, I find that a stone I hadn't originally chosen is screaming to be included, and I always honor that. Not all of the stones in the final palette are used, and usually the piece turns out entirely differently than what I had originally envisioned. It is a process that feeds my soui. I am inspired by the colors and textures of the materials I work with, and by my spirit guides (all animals! - see my profile), as well as by the constant presence when I'm beading of my two beloved rescued dogs (O'Keeffe and Teddy) and a giant rescued Maine Coon cat named Sassafras, who rules the roost. All three love to be a part of the process.
