The Bay Path
A Tale of Adventure and Romance When New England Was a Colony
By J. G. Holland
New York: The F. M. Lupton Publishing Company
1899

An attractive late-19th-century edition of J. G. Holland's historical novel The Bay Path, a tale of adventure, romance and colonial life set against the early settlement of New England.

Josiah Gilbert Holland (1819–1881) was an American author, poet and editor who later became one of the founders and the first editor of Scribner's Monthly.

Originally published in 1857, The Bay Path remained popular enough to appear in numerous editions throughout the remainder of the nineteenth century. This copy was published in 1899 by The F. M. Lupton Publishing Company of New York and is a later edition of the work; no First Edition claim is made.

The volume retains its attractive original maroon publisher's cloth binding, decorated with understated blind-stamped borders to the boards and gilt rules and lettering to the spine.

The top page edge is gilt, retaining considerable decorative appeal despite age-related wear.

Internally, the volume includes a black-and-white illustrated frontispiece and additional illustrations accompanying Holland's tale of colonial New England.

CONDITION

Good-minus antique condition overall, conservatively described, with age-, handling-, use-, storage- and shelf-related wear. Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the description.

Maroon cloth boards and spine exhibit varying degrees of fading/darkening, discoloration, rubbing, scratches, marks, staining, soiling and other surface wear.

Board edges, corners and spine ends exhibit rubbing, bumping, crushing, fraying and areas of material loss consistent with age and shelf wear.

Spine gilt remains attractive and readily visible overall but exhibits varying degrees of rubbing, dulling and loss.

Binding and hinges remain substantially together and holding but exhibit areas of looseness, weakness and beginning separation/breakaway. Careful handling is recommended.

Interior pages exhibit varying degrees of toning, foxing, spotting, staining, thumbing, soiling, roughened edges and other age-related imperfections. Occasional creases, bends, small tears or similar imperfections may be present.

Former-owner writing/inscription is present.

Page edges exhibit discoloration, staining, scratches, rubbing and marring. The gilt top edge remains decorative but exhibits age-related wear and loss.

No formal page-by-page bibliographic collation has been performed. The volume appears substantially intact upon general inspection; however, completeness of every leaf, illustration, blank or other ancillary element is not guaranteed.

Some photographs have been adjusted to better show fine details. The maroon cloth and gilt may appear brighter or more saturated in photographs than under ordinary lighting.

PROPS, FLOWERS, VASES, SCULPTURES, OTHER BOOKS AND DECORATIVE OBJECTS SHOWN IN PHOTOGRAPHS ARE NOT INCLUDED.
