The pendant that forms the centerpiece of NEPTUNE'S BLESSING is an antique (20th century) horseshoe pendant handmade of brass in Mali.

Okay, I have to admit this ... I began working with this necklace believing that Mali was an island nation, surrounded by the sea. I was listening as I worked to REIKI WHALE DREAMING, a beautiful, meditative CD by Kamal. And the piece came together on its own (as my pieces tend to do) with a lovely assortment of seashells (Cabu Beauty Lily Shell, Red Lip Shell, Everlasting Green Shell, and Shiva Shell) along with Crab Fire Agate beads, Turquoise heishe, chips of Moonstone and small, luminescent chips of Opal that reminded me of beach sand.

Once the piece was complete, I did a little research, and found that Mali (unlike BALI!) is in AFRICA, and is not even ON the sea. We learn something new every day. Further research (this is such an educational process!) revealed that the Roman god of the sea was Neptune, who was also the god of horses! And we all know that horseshoes are good luck. Ergo ... NEPTUNE'S BLESSING. It seems this necklace came together exactly as it was meant to after all, despite my geographical challenges.

NEPTUNE'S BLESSING is beautiful, powerful, unique and sure to be noticed! It closes with a simple brass hook clasp, and is 22" long. The pendant itself is 2" x 2".

ABOUT THE STONES:

CRAB FIRE AGATE - Creativity, protection, courage

Crab Fire Agate is a type of Spiderweb Carnelian Agate. As such, it shares the properties of Carnelian. Carnelian is an agate class of chalcedony that is a stone of creativity, individuality and courage. Like all agates, it has protection energies. It can aid memory, including recall of past lives. It can assist one in finding the right mate. It is also a stone of protection in general and from anger, jealousy and fear. In addition it can help with manifestation of one's desires, and brings good luck. Carnelian can help ease or remove sorrows. It also helps stabilize energies in the home. It is sometimes called the "actor's stone". Carnelian is associated with the root and sacral chakras. Physically, carnelian has been used to heal open sores, rejuvenate tissues and cells, rheumatism, kidney stones and other kidney problems, gall stones, colds, pollen allergies, and neuralgia.

SHIVA SHELL - Power; wisdom; creativity; spirituality

Shiva Shell, also known as Shiva's Eye, is the protective covering at the opening of the Turban snail shell. Towards the end of the snail's natural life this protective door (known as the operculum) detaches and sinks to the seabed. On one side of the Shiva eye shell is a beautiful spiral. The exact shape of the spiral is unique from one shell to the next. The color varies from beige to deep green, depending on the sea snail's diet, while the background always remains a milky white. This spiral symbol is also seen in the Japanese healing arts. In a form of Reiki this swirl symbolizes an energy force of power and strength. On the reverse side of the spiral is a mesh of colors that resembles an eye, from whence the shell's alternate name derives. The Eye of Shiva is the third eye in the middle of the forehead of the Hindu God Shiva. Representing wisdom, it is thought to have the ability to look beyond the obvious. It symbolizes the creation, preservation and destruction of everything, the flow of life, the constant change of the universe, spiritual knowledge and creative visualization.

SEASHELLS (General) - Calming; soothing; harmony; healing

Seashells have a very relaxing, rhythmic soothing energy. This energy feels very similar to the calming sensation of hearing waves crash on the beach, and can reduce stress & irritability. They help to balance emotions -- positive emotions become easier to express and negative emotions become soothed and more controllable. Seashells are also known for primordial memory recall. As our first experience on this earth is in the fluid world of our mother’s womb, shells can stimulate suppressed memories of childhood in a healthy & balanced way, and can help heal old emotional scars.

TURQUOISE - Wholeness; communication; spiritual expansion

Turquoise is a highly beneficial stone, attracting love, protecting its wearer from harm and enhancing one’s ability to see into the future. It is unique in that it truly reflects the individual wearing it by tuning into that person’s energies and transmitting them back into the world. It is a great aid to communication. Because turquoise contains elements of both the earth, where it was formed, and the sky, whose color it resembles, it assists us in achieving our goals and realizing our full potential. It is considered to be a healer of the spirit, and a provider of calm and peace of mind. It induces wisdom and understanding and can provide strength and protection during vision quests. It may also enhance trust and kindness and bring communication and creative skills to emotional situations. Turquoise is known well from North to Central America, Tibet, China, and the Mid-East, and is a sacred stone to many American native tribes. Navajos used ground turquoise in sand paintings to bring on the rain. North and Central American tribes placed the stone in tombs to protect the deceased. It is also revered as a protective stone and a bestower of goodness for the living. Pueblos laid it beneath the floor of newly built homes as an offering to the gods. Apache shaman had turquoise in their medicine bag for power in healing. On a bow, in some tribes, it was thought to ensure the accuracy to hit its mark. As a healing stone, turquoise is especially beneficial for the respiratory and immune systems. It has also been used in the treatment of headaches, regeneration of tissue, and stress-related skin disorders.

MOONSTONE - Calming; protection; love; connection with plants

Moonstone helps to cool, soothe and calm our emotions, and is associated with intuition, sensitivity and the feminine aspect of our nature. It enhances balance and introspection, and possesses reflective lunar energies that relate to new beginnings. It can help one focus on what's needed rather than what's wanted. Moonstone is believed to enhance psychic abilities. A gently protective stone, it is worn as a charm when traveling on or over the water. It can attract love, heal rifts between lovers and ensure restful sleep. As a healing stone, moonstone helps all parts of the lower torso, including digestive, cleansing and reproductive organs. If worn while gardening, it can help your plants and flowers to grow strong and healthy.

OPAL - Purification; calming; healing

Opal is known as "The Gem of the Gods," and has always had a mystical significance. It is an inspirational stone of love and hope, which is said to aid in psychic vision, imagination and creativity, and to have the power to open the spiritual centers. Opals contain water, and can amplify and mirror feelings, buried emotions and desires, helping to release inhibitions. Opal is also a very spiritual stone, and can help one be "invisible" in situations where you don't care to be noticed. Opal brings happy dreams. It also eases the process of change. Physically, opal is helpful for eyesight and Parkinson's disease.

MY PROCESS ...

In creating a necklace, I first select a focal piece, and then choose the various stones to complete it through an instinctive (and fun!) process. After lighting some incense and putting on some music that suits my mood that day (new age, world music, nature sounds, classical or soft jazz), I hold the pendant or focal stone in my hand as I look over ALL of the hundreds of types of stone beads in my collection, and choose several (way more than what will eventually be included - usually 20 or more types) that look and feel "right." Next, I narrow things down by repeating the process among the beads I first selected, and place handfuls of about a dozen different types in the old African Mancala game board I use as my beading palette. I then choose complementary glass seed beads (often used as spacers) and a clasp, and begin beading - entirely by instinct. Often, I will get to a certain point and begin over again, until the necklace that is meant to be reveals itself. Sometimes, I find that a stone I hadn't originally chosen is screaming to be included, and I always honor that. Not all of the stones in the final palette are used, and usually the piece turns out entirely differently than what I had originally envisioned. It is a process that feeds my soui. I am inspired by the colors and textures of the materials I work with, and by my spirit guides (all animals! - see my profile), as well as by the constant presence when I'm beading of my two beloved rescued dogs (O'Keeffe and Teddy) and a giant rescued Maine Coon cat named Sassafras, who rules the roost. All three love to be a part of the process.
