Labradorite, Mountain Jade, Czech Glass, Abalone Shell, Sterling Silver

Maybe it's because the holiday season is right around the corner, or perhaps it is the beautiful sparkling nature of the iridescent Labradorite, Abalone Shell and faceted Czech Glass, with accents of festive red Mountain Jade ... but this necklace feels like a celebration to me! It would be just the thing to wear on New Year's Eve (or anytime, for that matter!) ... elegant, festive, and ... affordable! I found myself humming Auld Lang Syne as I was creating this ...

AULD LANG SYNE is an ancient Scottish Tune ("Auld Lang Syne" translates roughly to "long, long ago") that celebrates the continuity of friendship over time. "Taking a cup o' kindness" refers to sharing a libation. And since I'm on a roll here ... did you know there are more verses to the song than we usually hear? Here they are:

Should old acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind ?
Should old acquaintance be forgot,
and old lang syne ?

CHORUS:
For auld lang syne, my dear,
for auld lang syne,
we'll take a cup of kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.
And surely you'll buy your pint cup !
and surely I'll buy mine !
And we'll take a cup o' kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.

We two have run about the slopes,
and picked the daisies fine ;
But we've wandered many a weary foot,
since auld lang syne.

We two have paddled in the stream,
from morning sun till dine† ;
But seas between us broad have roared
since auld lang syne.

Now that you're in the mood for a celebration, here is some information about the necklace!

AULD LANG SYNE is 18" long, and closes with a decorative floral Sterling Silver clasp.

ABOUT THE STONES:

LABRADORITE - Magic; protection; self-knowledge

Labradorite is a stone of magic, and it awakens in those who wear or carry it an awareness of one’s innate magical powers. It offers one the chance to embark on a journey of self-discovery, and helps one move toward self-mastery rather than control of others. Labradorite brings clarity and helps purge negative thought patterns. It lends insight and vision and allows one to communicate these gifts in a beneficial way. This stone facilitates transformation on all levels and allows for easy changes to take place, making it especially good for those who fear change. Labradorite brings out the best qualities in its wearer, and is a powerful stone in building self-esteem. It enhances faith and self-reliance, and may help one to realize one's destiny. Physically, it is a healing stone that can strengthen the immune system, and has been used in the treatment of disorders of the brain. It can improve digestion and metabolism and encourage restful sleep.

ABALONE SHELL - Calming; soothing

Abalone is purported to be especially useful for handling and calming emotional situations, and be very soothing to the emotions. Having abalone nearby when working through an emotional situation with someone is said to be beneficial, and to promote cooperation. Abalone is reported by intuitive sources to stimulates psychic development and intuition, and promotes imagination in a healthy way. Mystical Lore and Folklore says that abalone is helpful for arthritis and other joint disorders, muscle problems, the heart, and digestion.

MOUNTAIN JADE - Clarity; dream recall; tantra
Mountain "Jade" is actually a high-grade dolomite marble from Asia. Over the ages, mineral remains of shells and skeletons of millions of tiny sea animals were metamorphosed into this strong, beautiful marble used for centuries by sculptors. Marble is used in tantric activities and to help with clarity during meditative states. It’s also been used for recalling dreams. Marble is thought to help with serenity and mastery, and actualization of ones thoughts.

STERLING SILVER -Sterling Silver: Balance; intellect

Sterling Silver is a metal in tune with the energies of the body. It is especially beneficial to the brain, because it improves the transmission of nerve impulses and improves memory. It helps to balance the functions of both sides of the brain and enhances ones ability to approach intellectual problems.

MY PROCESS ...

In creating a necklace, I first select a focal piece, and then choose the various stones to complete it through an instinctive (and fun!) process. After lighting some incense and putting on some music that suits my mood that day (new age, world music, nature sounds, classical or soft jazz), I hold the pendant or focal stone in my hand as I look over ALL of the hundreds of types of stone beads in my collection, and choose several (way more than what will eventually be included - usually 20 or more types) that look and feel "right." Next, I narrow things down by repeating the process among the beads I first selected, and place handfuls of about a dozen different types in the old African Mancala game board I use as my beading palette. I then choose complementary glass seed beads (often used as spacers) and a clasp, and begin beading - entirely by instinct. Often, I will get to a certain point and begin over again, until the necklace that is meant to be reveals itself. Sometimes, I find that a stone I hadn't originally chosen is screaming to be included, and I always honor that. Not all of the stones in the final palette are used, and usually the piece turns out entirely differently than what I had originally envisioned. It is a process that feeds my soui. I am inspired by the colors and textures of the materials I work with, and by my spirit guides (all animals! - see my profile), as well as by the constant presence when I'm beading of my two beloved rescued dogs (O'Keeffe and Teddy) and a giant rescued Maine Coon cat named Sassafras, who rules the roost. All three love to be a part of the process.
