Mad Carew is a wonderful character from the poem "The Green Eye of the Yellow God", written in 1911 by J. Milton Hayes and a famous example of a "dramatic monologue". It begins...: "There's a one-eyed yellow idol To the north of Kathmandu; There's a little marble cross below the town; And a brokenhearted woman Tends the grave of 'Mad' Carew, While the yellow god for ever gazes down. He was known as 'Mad Carew By the subs at Kathmandu, He was hotter than they felt inclined to tell, But, for all his foolish pranks, He was worshipped in the ranks, And the Colonel's daughter smiled on him as well...."

A superb pair of bespoke WW1 era British Army Officer’s long leather Infantry field boots. In very good vintage condition and polished to a beautiful warm light chestnut colour. These could still be worn by serving officers in most Guards or Cavalry Regiments.

During the Edwardian era and into the early part of the 20 century Officers in most British and Commonwealth regiments (including Cavalry regiments in the US Army) wore long brown riding boots and breeches (pronounced britches) with uniform, whilst other ranks wore either black boots with extended khaki putees, leather half chaps, or black riding boots for those who were mounted. This type of field boot became very popular with Guards and Infantry officers, who tended to have hobnails in the soles of their boots, as these boots have. Nowadays only officers in the Cavalry and Guards regiments would wear these. At some point in their life a master boot maker has extended the height, by about 1 inch.

There were a number of variations on the Field boot- the number of lace holes or no laces, strapped, buckles that fully opened the boot at the front, toe caps or not; all were available and all were acceptable. These boots were never standard issued equipment and an officer would have been expected to have them made for him.

Complete with solid wood beech last or trees, these would make a superb entrance hall decorative item, also perfect for Polo or for any serving officer, once re soled.

They are approx UK size 11 or 12 and if worn would suit a taller person with slim calfs.
