chlorophyll molecule necklace with peridot

Description

Chlorophyll is the center of photosynthesis and makes plants green. At the center the chlorophyll molecule is a porphyrin ring. This beautiful and symmetrical structure is critical to function, binding a magnesium metal ion.

Chlorophyll shares this porphyrin ring structure with another important molecule, heme, critical for carrying oxygen in our blood. I appreciate this connection between plants and animals. In biology class we learn about the ecological dependencies of various organisms, but as a nascent gardener, I'm quickly gaining an intimate understanding of this on a practical level. Animals require plants and plants require animals. (And all of us multicellular organisms require healthy and diverse microbial communities, but that's a topic for a different necklace...)

The pendant is about 1.5 inches wide, made of solid sterling silver, and strung on a solid sterling silver ball chain, which can be adjusted between 16-18 inches.

I've represented the central magnesium ion by a dangling peridot gem stone. (I also make a heme version with a garnet.) Please note: I'm using natural gem stones, which are not perfectly spherical and may include inclusions - wonderfully individual & crafted by nature!

I imagine this molecular symbol appealing to gardeners, botanists, vegetarians, and renewable energy enthusiasts. It is a wonderful symbol for the "green" sustainability movement. The necklace comes with an info card in a gift box, making it a great gift.

FAQs

I can make custom molecule jewelry, if the molecule will work in my style. Prices start around $150 and the process usually takes 4-6 weeks.
Most of my jewelry is high quality, solid sterling silver. It is specially formulated to resist tarnish, but, like all silver, will tarnish. You can minimize oxidation by storing silver jewelry in a bag or box away from air and heat. Regularly wearing the jewelry can help rub off tarnish. I allow the silver serotonin necklace I wear daily to develop a bit of a patina. It's OK to wear your sterling silver jewelry in the shower.
Your order will come packaged in a cute, recycled paper gift box with a little card explaining what the molecule represents. I tie it with a ribbon, making a pretty package for gifting - no addition wrapping required.

If you are shipping directly to the gift recipient, I'm happy to include a card with your gift message. Just let me know when you order.
