Those who struggle with a mental illness know how intrusive thoughts can be sticky. They linger and don't want to go away. I experience this myself as I have OCD and I can get caught up believing what my brain tells me. A healthy phrase I was introduced to through therapy and remind myself of is "Thoughts are just thoughts". I thought it could be helpful for others too.
