Description

When I found this stick and saw how straight ans smooth it was and how creamy the heartwood was, I knew I needed to draw something elegant and minimal on it. The wood was beautiful by itself.

After it was all dried out and I had sanded it smooth I drew a large round curve. "Not another vine drawing" I thought. People get tired of my vine drawings even though I love drawing them.

It wasn't a vine. It was a wave. A big wave. A wave like a Japanese tsunami wave. A wave like the silk screen prints one sees of Mount Fuji with people trying to stay afloat on a little canoe-like boat that is dwarfed by this ragged outrageous wave.

So I put a Mt Fuji on it. But it could also be a Mt Shasta or some other mountain shaped like that. And I put a pink sky at sunset because it just seemed to go that way.

I sold the stick above but I will make another one for you if you want me to and I will do it on the type of stick below:

I have many dozens of blank sticks on hand. I can send a photo of the stick I plan on using before I apply illustration of you want me to.

Maple is usually standing dead and ranges in color from tan, grey, rust and beige to golden, ocher. The wood is hard and strong. Often it has splits in the wood that occur as the wood dries but does not affect the strength of the stick. Maple wood often has many knobs and knots in it.

Birch is softer, very light colored and is usually straight with fewer knots in it. If I dry the stick with the bark on it, the wood gets stained a soft beige or camel color like it has been tanned.

Service Berry is very dense and hard. It has a cream coloring to the wood and it usually has a crook or a turn in the wood every 3 or 4 feet. It is my favorite wood to hike with and to draw on.

I can personalize these sticks with your name or a short phrase at no extra charge.

I use almost exclusively the U.S mail--unless the postal service of the country the customer is in won't carry a walking stick. Then I go to Fed Ex or UPS. Each stick is wrapped in paper and then wrapped in bubble wrap. To date I have only had one stick arrive broken.

I cannot be responsible for delays due to customs or local delivery carriers.

CUSTOM ORDERS:

Almost all sticks are made to order. Tell me if you want your name on the stick or some other special message. Usually there is no charge unless it is a long detailed message.

If you want me to make a custom stick with a subject that is not on my listings page please send artwork or samples of what you want me to draw and I will quote a price and a timetable. Give me a couple weeks.

I will personalize a stick I have posted: Put your name on it or a date. No charge for this. I will draw something I did in the past on a new stick. So, don't hesitate saying you want me to draw one that is not currently posted again. Just for you. No problem.

Please allow a couple weeks for custom orders.
