'Black' by Joanna Layla 2013

Limited edition giclee print in a print edition of 50.

'Black' is from the 'Red is for...' print series. Each image in the series is inspired by original drawings I made in my sketchbooks capturing life in China at the start of 2013, and by Chinese Colour theory.

'Black' is from a drawing I made of a Chinese flower seller in Dali, Yunnan Province. A flower seller from a local hill tribe against the backdrop of super highway construction.

Chinese colour theory inspired me to think about how colours affect our reading of an image and in this series of illustrations a prism of colour in each image prompts the viewer’s eye to make a reading of the image - to ‘colour in’ the drawing in their mind’s eye. For example, the colour black has very different meanings in China - it is the colour of heaven, of neutrality, water and daily life.

The ‘Red Is For…’ Series explores Chinese colour theory through 5 illustrations and 1 colour code. Chinese colour theory is based on five key colours that correspond to states of being / emotions / seasons / meanings.

For more see the Chinese Colour Theory code print in this series.
