While the unit can stand freely on its base, maximum stability and zero-sway performance are achieved only when properly mounted to a wall stud using the included hardware.
If the product is used without wall mounting:

Stability performance may not meet expectations for highly active or larger cats.

I love love love this piece of furniture! The cats are using it already too, and it looks fabulous in my living room. It was shipped so fast, only took a couple hours to put together, and is much sturdier than I feared it would be. The pillows are highest quality and the canvas-like Velcro attachments for them even hold my 19 pound chunky cat, Tino. Tino, Willy, Stormy and Ash say thank you so much to WLO Store/Manufacturing
Item came quickly and was packed very well. Product looked like images and was easy to put together. I had one bolt that had no threads but contacted the seller and they quickly responded and sent replacements. Excited for my fur babies to start to explore their new tree!
