Ca.1850 Jewelry Hair Pin/ Brooch, 15K Rose Gold, Hand Wrought, Regency England.
A lovely quality antique English, solid 15K gold (tested) mourning pin; beautifully made, with a glazed locket compartment containing a professionally woven hair memento.

An elaborately articulated, gold scroll work, design frames this delicately woven hair motif; which is safe guarded under oval beveled crystal (front and back).

This pin may have been a love token since there is no black ornamentation or monogramming to suggest that it was a mourning brooch.
Most mourning pins were commissioned by affluent folks to be given to their relatives at the time of their death. Not to be too cynical, but that may be why most mourning jewelry shows no wear!

Moms and wives were the main wearers of these keepsakes which prior to photographs were a light and delicate and lasting reminder of a loved one who had pass ed away.

The brooch is over 150 years old.
It has the old T back with a C hook and both function properly.

There is a 3mm. bail on the back of the scroll work which was meant to have a safety chain attached.
Many old fine broaches had a thin chain, with a little pin, that could be attached to a garment, and thereby prevent the loss of the brooch... in case the clasp opened.
A bail could be attached and the brooch could then be worn as a necklace, on a chain.

The gold frame is in excellent condition and the pretty lock of blond hair remains sealed within the glass frame.

ORIGIN: UK; most probably, 1850s scroll work design, plaited and preserved blond hair.
METAL: Some darkish red age patina on the rose gold. After cleaning a bit on the back the pin, it returned to a solid rose gold color, without any of the darkness, that might otherwise imply plating. The section cleaned tested 15k gold.

HAIR: Ash Blond but not white.

SIZE: 1 1/2" by 7/8" = 38mm. by 22mm.
DEPTH: 5/16" = 8mm.

WEIGHT: 6.1gms.

CONDITION: Excellent vintage condition for both the gold work and the 2 crystals.
It has the old T back with a C hook and both function properly.
No sign of any repairs.

Boxed for gift giving; free gift wrap on request.
