Item details

Vintage from the 1940s

This menu was created by Hawaiiana artist Frank McIntosh in the 1940s. Unlike so many of these menus you will find, this one is NOT a reproduction. This is the real deal souvenir from the SS Malolo (later named SS Matsonia) luxury ocean liner. During a time when traveling by ship was a truly glamorous and indulgent affair, the poem on the back of this menu cleverly introduces us to the wine list: "Wine whets the wit, improves its native force, / And gives a pleasant flavour to discourse. / JOHN POMFRET / Consult the Wine List for a selection exactly to your taste." The colors are rich and intact for a piece of card stock that is nearly 70 years old.

Dimensions: width 9" x height 11"

Condition: The menu is in very good vintage condition: The top and bottom were cut, and it appears a small piece of tape was stuck to the bottom left at some point. It is on the white border just to the left of the man. All of these minor issues would be hidden by matting and framing. Otherwise, the menu is in great shape.
