Highlights
Book Reproductions from the Book of Kells, Published and Printed by Eyre and Spottiswoode, London, 1939 for the Government of Ireland. Cream colored portfolio with title on front cover in gilt lettering. The publication information at bottom of rear cover. One page of text printed inside front cover, and 3 tissue-protected color copies tipped to the inside rear cover. The portfolio is good but has damage to bottom edge and corners. The three reproduction images are I believe in very good condition. The Book of Kells is considered the finest example of Irish monastic illumination and in 1939 these three facsimiles were considered the best. Images measure 11" by 14 3/4" , and include the "famous monogram page, containing the opening words of the Gospel of St. Matthew, i, 18 --'"XPI (Christi) autem generatio". Overall book is 12 1/4" by 18 1/2". I think you will find this edition is not easily found, anywhere.
