Description

SAVE 20%, was $28.00, now $22.40.
Great sign featuring businesses from Big Spring, Texas, circa most likely 1940s. More details below*** NOTE that I also have another Big Spring ad sign listed. Just search "Big Spring" in my shop!
I love the rugged industrial sign of this vintage letterpress printing stereo block. Truly a piece of letterpress printing history. I love old letterpress and was puzzled by this block as it is not backwards as a typical letterpress is. The person I got this from didn't know anything about it except "they were used to make telephone book advertisements for businesses. " Since it is an advertisement for a business and due to the flat size, it looks very much like a sign and can be displayed as one. Upon research I found that this "stereo block" was made as a mold of the original printing block. The stereotype is a duplicate of a block or type form and is made by making a mold from the original (which is what this is in this listing), and from this mold casting a plate of metal, rubber, or plastic.
This allowed the print shop to keep a mold of the original and make future molds. It appears to possibly be made of some type of heat resistant hard board with layers of paper and a very hard rubber like substance on top. (Think of hardness like a vinyl record! ) A beating or pressing process apparently made the image in the top surface and you can see this created a reverse image all the way thru to the back. (See photo 4.)These type blocks look like little black signs since they are thinner than the actual letterpress block would be. Very sturdy, you can lean it, attach a hanger and hang or frame to hang or stand on a desk, counter. Great industrial ambiance of this old printing jewel. Very strong and doesn't bend. The black detailed surface makes a wonderful juxtaposition in a vignette with a contrast of old glass bottles or white, black organic textures like found on shells & coral.
***The BLOCK sign in this listing measures 8 3/4" long by 7 3/4" tall by 3/16" thick. It's a perfect size to display on a shelf, counter, stack of books, in a vignette or alone, or to frame or hang. Definitely supports the old telephone book advertisement history. Several businesses from Big Spring Texas are featured : Cash-Way Super Market (great illustration of stretching the dollar), City Plumbing Company, Electric Motor & Equipment Co. (Herman Taylor, Owner), Adair Music Company (featuring nice "Baldwin" in gorgeous font), J & H Drug, Drugs and Sundries - Fountain Service. All of these businesses appear to be on Gregg Street. Note old phone numbers!

I am dating this to Circa 1940s based on other blocks that were with it that also had people in clothing, other images & transportation that were from the 1940s.
Perfect sign for the Kitchen, Work Shop, Art Studio, Printing Studio, Pharmacist, the lover of old signage, fonts, and historical printing memorabilia. Great for a shelf, office space, business counter, print shop, etc.
I do have some others I may be listing from various U.S. cities, Pharmacies (Spanish, possibly Cuban "Farmacia"), some with a variety of businesses on the stereo block. (ie piper airplanes, super markets, gas, investment businesses, etc)

And here is another explanation of what this is:

Printing: duplicate printing plate cast from a paper matrix used in letterpress. Newspapers or other print media who use the letterpress printing method require advertisers to provide a plate of their ad. This is done by creating a metal mold of the ad. A paper-mache mold is then made by pressing the paper material against the metal plate under pressure so that a matrix forms a mirror image. The paper matrix is then mailed (at a low cost) to the newspaper, where another metal mold is created by pouring metal over the matrix. This duplicate mold is called a stereotype.
