Description

Fantastic, rare piece of American history....

{ca 1900}

Handsome watch chain featuring three fobs, each with different images on both back and front. Each of the medallions is expertly engraved - every inch of the piece is covered with decoration.

The images are as follows, starting from the top medallion down and continuing on the verso:

(1) Wood spoked tire with wings on either side - I have done research on this wing and wheel insignia and have not been able to pinpoint the exact motoring club this belonged to. In 1902 there were only around 23,000 automobiles on America's roads but there were about 50 different auto club springing up across the country.

(2) Side profile of an Edwardian lady with a gorgeous wide brimmed motoring hat adorned with a trail of ribbons. She is shown also wearing her duster coat to protect her dress from the dusty roads.

(3) Beautifully detailed image of an early automobile with surrounding trees and scenery. I am NOT an expert but am guessing this to be around a 1905 model. (please feel free to correct me)

(4) Driving gloves, a wrench and a screwdriver

(5) Automobile Lantern

(6) The driver / chauffeur - wearing the usual motoring fashion - with hat and coat. You can see a snippet of the steering wheel in the bottom left of the medallion.

{condition}
Light wear, as expected. The metal is darkened and appears to have once been lightly gilded.
No damage aside from the swivel clip. The lever mechanism does not completely close but does move back and forth properly.

{measurements}
Total length: 4 3/8"
Bottom fob: 1 1/4" in diameter
Middle fob: 1" in diameter
Top fob: 3/4" in diameter
