Highlights
These charming Japanese 950 sterling silver salt and pepper shakers are modeled after traditional Geta Okobo sandals worn by apprentice Geisha known as Maiko. The pair feature realistic detail including woven bamboo soles and thick hanao thong straps. One sandal has 5 openings at the front for pepper and the other has 3 for salt. The undersides are equipped with round sliding hatches enabling access to the salt and pepper compartments.
The salt and pepper shakers are in very good condition with no repairs. As vintage pieces, they show signs of age including light scratching and marks to the silver noted for accuracy. The shakers measure 1.75" by 1.125" and stand .75" as measured to their tallest points. The undersides carry the Asahi Shoten silver mark, the fineness mark "950" and "STERLING". They have a combined weight of just over 40 grams.
These well-made salt and pepper shakers display beautifully and would be a great addition to a sterling salt and pepper shaker collection or work equally well showcased on their own. A lovely and useful find!
