Description

Walter Baker (1859-1912) a British painter who came to Canada and lived in the province of Quebec, loved the cities in Quebec and Montreal and was a prolific artist until his passing. As a listed Canadian painter his works are of a miniaturist with precise details and colors as deep as Nicholas Hornyansky would be years later.

Everything he saw in these cities, various views of buildings, the churches and monuments, the forts and fortifications, historical personalities, the inhabitants, all the activities in and around Montreal and Quebec City were his subjects of choice.

And also he loved painting scenes from Canadian history and from earlier artists, mostly using watercolors as his medium of choice.

He is a listed Canadian artist and is represented by:

Winnipeg Art Gallery - Clara Lander Library
Library and Archives Canada - Art and Photography Section Library
National Gallery of Canada - Library and Archives / Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography

In this watercolor wagons pulled by work horses are filled with food and goods for sale for the town folk. There are people watching out of windows and others standing on the street while the vendors are setting up and it seems, except for the horses our markets are basically the same today.

Not only the subjects of this painting but the painter himself are a part of our heritage.
