Fernando Gallego (1440 - 1507) was a Spanish painter whose art took much from the Flemish style predominate at that time. He can be considered as painting in a Hispano-Flemish style. This book, "Fernando Gallego and the Retablo of Ciudad Rodrigo" was written by Robert M. Quinn and published by the University of Arizona Press in 1961. The text is accompanied by a Spanish translation by Renato Rosaldo. There is one magnificent full-page color plate and numerous full-page monochrome plates. As well there are vignette close-ups through the text presenting details of various pieces. The Retablo of Ciudad Rodrigo depicts in numerous paintings the life of Christ, as well as various other symbolic episodes from the Bible. The entire work is a remarkably beautiful tableau. Mr. Quinn places Fernando Gallego within the proper artistic and historical milieu, and analyzes each painting within the tableau, explaining the symbolism contained in each picture. The book is a fascinating and beautiful scholarly work examining an artistic masterpiece by an artist who is, possibly, not known to a majority of modern Americans.
