I noticed there was a severe lack of options in the form underglaze takes for ceramic artists. There are plenty of color options, but they all come in liquid form. These are dried in gansai tambi-style, large watercolor pans so the artists can use the glaze in a variety of opacities for a watercolor effect.
The glazes themselves are the famous underglazes with a fuzzy fabric as their namesake. The underglaze company does make a palette in this form, but they do not sell the colors individually and the quantities are very small in comparison to what I sell: my pans contain approximately 8x the amount of underglaze.
All of the underglazes are lead and cadmium free and are dinnerware safe with a clear glaze over them. They can be fired from cone 06-10, however, the color will darken in the upper cones. The underglaze can be applied to both bisque and greenware.
To use them, think watercolor! Spray the top of the dried pans with water a few minutes before use, and use a brush to create washes of desired opacity in a separate palette. My ceramic paint palettes work perfectly for this! It is a truly different and amazing effect/approach to underglazing your ceramics that is endlessly inspirational.
The ceramic test tiles pictured in the listing showcase the range of opacities the underglaze can achieve. The test tiles are low-fire white earthenware with a low-fire clear glaze over half of it.

***Please Note: These pans of dried underglaze are very different from watercolors in the way they dry. Think of dry mud in the desert and how it cracks. I have been very honest in the photographs showing how some underglaze colors have severe cracking. This does not effect the function of the underglaze, but is unexpected in regard to other dried color products. Because I don't add extra chemicals to keep them slightly moist, which effects the performance of the underglaze, the pans are fragile. However, because they are re-wettable, adding water will help stick them back to the pans if they fall out. Because of their fragility, I would not recommend taking them into the field for outdoor ceramics--though I am not sure that is a thing. Haha.
