During my last semester in college I took a course called Japan and the Asian Pacific Rim. At the time I was working on my BFA Exhibition in Ceramics. I had been making objects that resembled the pagoda as sort of an exercise in putting together multiple wheel thrown parts... a bowl placed upside down on a cylinder. In the Pacific Rim class I had to give a presentation on one of the Asian countries, so I chose China and the spread of Buddhism from Indian. I learned in the spread of Buddhism came the spread of architectural forms that later led to the evolution of the pagoda. The connections I realized were fascinating.
Now I make lanterns based on the same form but in recognition of the Japanese tradition of the ishi-doro lantern I researched for an art project for my students.
