Box of Chaos
Materials: handmade paper, hand set metal type, photo engravings
Susan Happersett makes sequential drawings based on mathematical concepts. When she took Esther K Smith's Artist Books class at Cooper Union, she began making her drawing series into one-of-a-kind books. Because her line quality was perfect for letterpress, Esther asked her to collaborate on a project--and they have been making books together for more than 15 years now! This new piece is a portfolio box of 8 interactive accordions that interlock into 4 sculptural books. These drawings are about Chaos theory-- the idea is that chaos is not something random, but the result of tiny discrepancies and one thing leading to another. The story of this book is a perfect example. The book was set to launch at Editions Artist Books Fair--and was half-printed-- when Hurricane Sandy hit New York City and flooded Chelsea, including the building that would have housed the fair. THEN--one of the papers, from Nepal, was not available. It was scheduled to arrive the next month--and then the next month and then the next month. They chose a different paper. And THAT one was not in stock. But one wholesaler had just a few sheets left-- it was enough to finish the edition-- and now almost 2 years after its initial launch date, the book is finally available. BUT WORTH THE WAIT!

They're beautifully made, no others like them are out there, and I get compliments on them wherever I go!
My friend absolutely loves these! She's very excited that they're both wearable AND readable, and they look stylish, too. They also shipped quickly and arrived quickly (which made up for me having missed her birthday). Thank you!!
yay! thank you so much! so excited over these books. and i love the extras! this was just what i was looking for! =D
The book is very very nice, very well done and clear. I imagined a small book but it's big! And I love its "maquette" (I don't know the world in English), its style. Thank you too for the dedicace and for the lovely gift. nMerci Esther et peut-être à bientôt un jour à Paris :-) nCecile
