Description

Steampunk is a sub-genre of science fiction that features steam-powered and mechanical vehicles, weapons and contraptions in settings inspired by an alternate history of the 19th century British Victorian era or the American Wild West. Clocks, locks, keys, gears and buckles are some the most recognizable Steampunk style elements and they work quite beautifully with seed bead embroidery.

I created this bib style necklace for the Etsy Beadweavers Challenge "Steampunk Style". I've named this piece "Setting the Course". A Victorian era lady explorer would wear this necklace in order to set her course for her next adventure through time or across the globe. A compass rose in the center helps plot direction while the clock in the right corner plots the time. They are surrounded by the mechanical gears that run the contraption and decorated with bead embroidery as a nod to the Victorian sensibility of fashion.

I did my embroidery right on a dark camel colored microsuede backed with heavy pellon and used an assortment of seed beads and beautiful rare vintage nailhead trims along with genuine brass cuckoo clock gears. The nailhead beads and hex delicas create a nice sparkle. A lustrous lunasoft cabochon in copper decorates the top while seed beads in bronze, copper and iris green accent the freeform shape of the bib. A twisted herringbone rope of size 8 bronze and green iris beads is connected by two open gears and a sweet little clockface button and loop closure. The bib portion is 9.5" across and about 4" deep at the center. The entire necklace measures about 27" around the neck (but can be shortened or lengthened to your preferences). The bib is backed with the same soft dark camel microsuede.

This piece is a real show stopper and conversation starter! Whether you are dressing for your local steampunk society gathering, a fun party or just to be the coolest person in your office, you'll enjoy the Victorian industrial look of this piece.
