Description

Note: I have received a kind note suggesting that basket is Columbian and made of grass, a reference was given, but at the moment I cannot confirm or deny this. Please let me know if you can.
__

This gorgeous vintage large lidded pine needle (grass?) basket would look great alongside any respectable Danish Modern or modernist collection of Indigenous Folk Art. As any good modernist knows, well done (indigenous) folk arts are easily appreciated with a modernist aesthetic, and this basket is no exception.

Admittedly, I'm out of my area of expertise with this one, but considering only what I could find on the interweb out there, this basket seems, by pattern alone, seems to be of Native American of origin. Guessing, and in no way attributing, to either Navajo, Skokomi, or Yuki Tribes, and guessing that this is an antique or at least vintage piece.

The basket is very well crafted, and has a gorgeous sort of checkered geometric pattern that weaves in and out around in a double band on the walls of the basket and can be found again on the lid. The lid has some truly beautiful colors, and colors of the pattern on walls seems to have faded in comparison. Basket type seems unique, or at least not very common, and has a really ingenious lid that is attached to a part of the handle that is a great design feature and evidence of some serious basket design work and basket weaving prowess. (I'm definitely not privy to basket making technique, but I'm really not sure how this was done as it seems to be woven together with the basket meaning both lid and basket were woven interconnected and at the same time(?). Such brilliant design work and such a smart way not to loose a lid as well!

As far as condition goes, there are a few splotches some dark stains of some sort on the bottom and very few stray or broken needles here and there around on the lid and basket. I suspect (?) that the needles that twist around the handle may have been replaced at some point in it's life, as they spiral down off the handle and into the body of one side of the basket, and seem to be a slightly thicker needle that is just a bit lighter in color and do not seem to match the rest of the basket. They seem added into the piece. (pict 3). I should also mention the basket and handle slump a little to one side, as if it were carried quite a bit on the other end of the handle (on the side where the lid attaches) and that it's load was a bit heavy and stretched the basket forward. With many the goods I usually describe, these characteristics would likely be considered flaws, but in this case I consider it provenance, and it suggests some age here, that it was made for use, and then that it was was actually used.

I guess a 1920-40s date at this, but it's a pretty blind guess -- could be earlier or later(?). A seemingly rare and very special basket regardless.

NOTE: I am not an expert on baskets in anyway and am just describing what I see, and what I can find out. Please let me know if you have more specific information that you can share with me on this great piece.

NOTE: Please let me know if you would like more pictures and I would be glad to send you more.
