Genuine Carved Shell Cameos, 12k Gold Filled Settings

On Sale: Previously $85

I chose this lovely pair of genuine shell cameo earrings for the fine detail in the miniature carving on each silhouette. Lifelike details in such a small sized vintage cameo are very difficult to achieve, but down to the smallest flower and lock of hair, these lovely earrings were expertly hand carved. Framed in 12k gold fill, these vintage earrings have screw backs that can be worn with both pierced and non-pierced ears.

Matched for size, the carving on each cameo is slightly different, making the pair both charming and unique. This is typical of genuine cameo pairs, with only glass and resin cameos being exactly the same from one to the next. Each non-pierced earring measures approximately 1/2 inch (14mm) including the frame. The mercury dime shown throughout my listing photos is the same size as a modern US dime. It measures 18mm in diameter and is included to help show scale.

I have given these earrings a gently cleaning and conditioned the cameos with pure white mineral oil to protect them from dry air. They show light wear and fine scratches consistent with their age. They would make a lovely addition to any vintage jewelry collection and will arrive gift wrapped at no extra charge.

Cameos have been carved as jewelry since the times of ancient Rome and Greece. The earliest cameos depicted philosophers and ancient deities and were carved of hard gemstone such as agate and onyx. As cameos became more popular, artists switched to shell which was both easier to carve and more affordable. When held to the light, shell cameos are translucent with subtle color variations and softly curved backgrounds, never completely flat. Cameos reached the height of their popularity in the Victorian era of the mid 1800's, when they were still carved from shell but also began to be made of glass and even resin, which is the most popular material used for cameos today.
