BACK STORY
If ever you've spied a Balinese calendar, you might have found it a most bewildering thing. The saka calendar is one of two calendars used on the Indonesian island of Bali.

Unlike the 210-day pawukon calendar, it is based on the phases of the moon, and is about the same length as the Gregorian year.

The saka year comprises 12 months, or sasih, of 30 days each.

Each month begins the day after a new moon and has 15 days of waxing moon until the full moon - Purnama - then 15 days of waning, ending on the new moon - Tilem. Both Purnama and Tilem are marked by significant ceremonies in households and temples throughout the island.

The first day of the Balinese year is usually the day after the first new moon in March. The new year is marked by one of the holiest and most significant days on either of the Balinese calendars, Nyepi, also known as the Day of Silence.

“The moon is a loyal companion. It never leaves. It’s always there, watching, steadfast, knowing us in our light and dark moments, changing forever just as we do. Every day it’s a different version of itself. Sometimes weak and wan, sometimes strong and full of light. The moon understands what it means to be human. Uncertain. Alone. Cratered by imperfections.” ~ Tahereh Mafi, Shatter Me
