Description

This brooch was created for the Etsy Beadweavers August challenge "Scotland the Brave." My maternal ancestors were all of Scot-Irish descent and immigrated to the United States during the great migration of the mid to late 1700's. This brooch is named for my great-grandfather William Harris Craig.

Clan Craig is from the Aberdeenshire region of Scotland and is considered a small highland clan. The name in Gaelic means rocky hill so anyone in ancient times with the name Craig was known to live near a steep rock. The tartan for Clan Craig features the colors typical of the Scottish highlands which includes heather gray, green, red, yellow and black. I have represented these colors in the brooch. In one of the photos, you will see an insert that depicts the tartan along with the clan badge and motto which is "J'ai Bonne Esperance"....I have good hope!

I have included other imagery of Scotland in the design of the brooch including the copper stamping which features a Jacobean design and resembles a plaid brooch that would be worn by a Scottish highlander. Also, the Celts were very connected to the earth so I've used green Sea Sediment jasper cabochons that have the appearance of green grass and brown earth, and patinated copper metal leaf charms. Finally, I have fashioned the bottom of the brooch in a 3-point design which represents the iconic Celtic triangle or "Triquetra."

This stunning piece has been embroidered with Japanese seed beads, both gold and red Swarovski 3mm crystals, fresh water pearls and copper metal beads. Including the chain, this brooch measures 6" long and is 3 1/4" wide. The back is finished with a light copper colored metallic leather. A 24" copper chain can be included for an additional $8 that will allow this brooch to be worn as a pendant necklace. Please convo me if you would like this to be added and I will adjust the price accordingly.

A true piece of wearable art that will be the highlight of any wardrobe!
