Description

**NOTE: This is the first piece in my "Mythic Pairs" series of layered reliefs and I am obliged to announce that they are almost entirely sold out. Of the 150 edition size, only ten remain available for online purchase. So, if you have had your eye on this piece, please be advised that it will be sold out in the next couple months.

Odin's Ravens: Hugin and Munin are captured in cold-cast bronze, nickel silver and stone. These two famous birds were sent out each morning to fly around the world and report back to Odin on the news and events of the day (it is in this way that Odin achieved something like Omniscience.)

Symbolic of the search for and acquisition of knowledge, people often display them in their library, study, office or wherever they do their most profound thinking or make their biggest decisions.

The ravens are seen perched on a rune stone upon which is carved a sampling of Futhark (the Norse alphabet) and a depiction of Odin astride his eight-legged horse, Sleipnir.

This piece is crafted from four separate castings using cold-cast bronze, nickel silver and stone-infused resin. Patinas, stains, inks and/or paints are applied and the pieces are buffed to bring out highlights. They are then hand assembled, covered with a clear coat and mounted in a beautiful black no-glass shadowbox frame measuring 12" x 12" x 1.5". This piece is limited to 150 signed pieces.

FRAMING OPTION: This piece is available in your choice of black or walnut frame.

Digging a little deeper into the story of Hugin and Munin...

It is widely accepted that the name Hugin means "thought" and the name Munin means "memory." However, there is some academic debate over this since the root word of Hugin (hunr) means "thought," it is tempting to consider that the root word of Munin is derived from the old norse word "munr" meaning "desire." Given the sheer number of experts who have weighed in on the subject and the relatively few who support the alternate translation, I suspect the more universally accepted translation (thought and memory) is likely correct. But, as with so much about Norse mythology, history and culture, it is difficult to be entirely certain and this may be yet another mystery that will remain shrouded from view.

The Eddic poem Grímnismál describes them thus (from the perspective of Odin):

Hugin and Munin
Fly every day
Over all the world;
I worry for Hugin
That he might not return,
But I worry for Munin more.

I’m so absolutely in love with these pieces, I just had to include “Freyja’s Cats” and an Yggdrasil to boot! My pieces are a beautiful addition for my new home. Pictures truly can’t show how amazing these pieces are made.

Aric, your craftsmanship and obvious love for your art shows and it’s brilliant. Thank you so much for these beloved pieces. They’ll one day be passed down in my family, because they’re ‘timeless’ pieces of my family’s heritage. You have a loyal customer who definitely will be purchasing more pieces in the near future, and I’m excited to begin receiving the miniatures of the month; I had to subscribe because I enjoy your work. Thank you so much!

With utmost sincerity,

Brielle Brennan
