Materials

925 sterling silver, lab grown amethyst, chrysoprase, natural stabilized Chinese turquoise, carved carnelian birds, nylon coated braided steel beading wire, Peruvian blue opal

Dimensions

Necklace length: 20 Inches

I strung this 20 inch (50.8 cm) carved gemstone Bohemian bird necklace together with bold ethnic colors and the sweetest hand carved orange carnelian bird beads. Brilliant viridian chrysoprase, a rare Australian gemstone that gets its color from nickel, is spaced strategically between tiny sterling silver beads, pale blue Peruvian opals, and sparkling faceted amethyst gems to create a bright blue sky for these tiny songbirds.

This color combination of red or bright orange and blue-green in stone jewelry is sacred to many ancient societies from Native Americans in the southwest to the Tibetan Buddhists of the Himalayas. They represent the sky or spirit, and the primal red of the Earth: life. Carnelian is an ancient sacred stone, used widely all over the world, that often signifies the life force in these holy adornments.

There is something so alien about chrysoprase. Its coloring is so vivid it sometimes appears unnatural. To me, it is the stone that closest represents the extremes our natural world is capable of. That amidst the usual rainbow of gemstone colors, we can still find something shocking to our senses, something that doesn't rely on dyes or heat treatments to be one of the most potent colors we can see. For this reason, I chose chrysoprase to stand with turquoise to represent the awesome mystery of the spirit world.

One of a kind.
