This listing is for a real pressed herbarium specimen featuring the Japanese Painted Fern. Since all of my specimens are one of a kind, this is a photograph of the exact specimen you will receive.
Framed Botanicals are a current decorating trend and have been showcased in Better Homes and Gardens and Martha Stewart Living as well as numerous design blogs. Often the botanicals are reproductions of Victorian paintings or illustrations but why have a piece of art that is a reproduction when you can have a real piece of preserved nature? Each of my collected specimens is one of a kind and numbered to correspond to collection and mounting date. This specimen is number #14063.
This botanical was collected in the Philadelphia area and pressed using traditional botany techniques. It was mounted on herbarium paper (which is made from a linen rag blend and is pH neutral and acid free) using my own blend of botany paste for archival quality. It measures 16.5in x 11.5in (roughly 42cm x 29cm) which is the standard museum/university size for herbarium sheets. I have antiqued the paper with a wash of walnut ink and have hand lettered the scientific name across the bottom of the paper like you would see in Victorian prints. Though most herbarium specimens have the collection label mounted on the bottom right corner of the sheet, I have decided to include the collection information on the back of the specimen so that it might function as an unbroken art piece, while still retaining the scientific integrity of a true herbarium specimen. The piece is then sealed with a UV protective coating, so that the colors of the specimen do not fade when framed and hung in your home. However, like all museum pieces, specimens should be kept out of direct sun to prevent degradation.
I ship my unframed specimens inside an archival quality sleeve, packaged with cardboard, and inside a bubble mailer.
