Myths of the North American Indians by Lewis Spence (1874 – 1955) was first published in 1914. This wonderful print called “He emerged in his own country” is an illustration by James Jack and is from a 1932 version published by Farrar & Rinehart Publishers. Spence was a Scottish journalist who over his long career published more than forty books that ranged in topic from Scottish folklore, to mythology, to the occult. This book has proven to be such a classic it is still in print today and many of Jack’s illustrations are so popular they continued to be reproduced today.

The soft muted colors and unique interpretation of the Indian myths offers a glimpse into art created early in the 20th century. The print definition and quality are typical of that time period as well, lacking much of the sharp clarity that is available today with offset printing but adds timeless charm to this beautiful and unique image.

There is slight uniform yellowing of the paper around the actual image as well as some wear at the page edges in line with what you would expect of a print that is 75+ years old. The rough edge from the binding has been removed but that is the only "altering" that has taken place (the interior edge is trimmed). Prints are carefully mounted on mats to simplify framing after purchase and to protect the print during shipment. All mat materials are acid and lignin free, the actual print is not archival safe. The original book measured approximately 5-1/2 x 8-1/4” but the book plate is being sold custom matted to fit in an 8x10 standard frame.
