Description

Egbert Oudendag (1914 – 1998)

"Egbert Oudendag was a Dutch immigrant who settled in at White Rock, B.C. in 1953, grabbed a few oils and some brushes and began to paint, (and live), voraciously. He was a man who made his own canvasses, cutting them out of masonite boards. He modified his own brushes. He even made his own paints, cutting every tube with a secret mix of oils and fixers that gave him a long brushstroke and incredibly smooth lines.

His style was to use very few colors and a few striking images on a minimal background, eliminating everything that didn't serve. The results are paintings that glow on the walls with translucent colors and subtle shadings and maximum impact." (Tony Berryman)

His was a simplified style using long and big brush strokes and leaving them virtually unchanged.

He was largely self-taught; however, in his early 30’s he studied for several years in Amsterdam with the portraitist and famous art forger Hans Van Meegeren (see AskART).

His paintings are primarily exhibited in commercial galleries in Canada and the United States, and they are in many private collections.

There are numerous newspaper articles about him dating from his first entry into Canada (eg. Globe and Mail, Toronto, Sept 7,1949) up to his death. He is listed in A Dictionary of Canadian Artists (1974), by Colin S. MacDonald, published by Canadian Paperbacks Ltd. (8 volumes); and in The Collector's Dictionary of Canadian Artists at Auction (2001), by Anthony R. Westbridge and Diana L. Bodnar, published by Westbridge Publications Ltd. (4 volumes).

He is a listed Canadian artist and was considered a Master Painter by the Canadian community of artists, teaching and mentoring many west coast painters.

This painting, "Purse Steiner" is the most successful kind of fishing boat in the world, catching almost 70% of all the fish caught for consumption, worldwide. A purse seine is a giant net — as much as a mile long — that can catch a whole school of fish in one go. As a youth, Egbert worked on such boats in the Baltic Sea.

As to the impact and image of this painting: a heroic, independent and marvelously efficient image of an original mind at work who has given us what it looks like to be a useful, successful, independent, free spirited human being, with all its strengths and limitations.

Gallery marker is en verso. The painting is in very good condition, ready to hang.
