Each doll I make is special to me. Each one is unique and comes alive as I work on them. Traditionally, Native American Dolls usually are face-less in honor of the creator. As the Creator of my dolls, I see their personalities come alive. I envision little back stories of who they are and what they like to do. They comes alive to me as I sew their little outfits, make and bead their moccasins and accessories, and adhere and style their hair. The little details of their faces add the finishing touch and make them a treasure.

Ribbon and Trade Cloth Dresses:

As woven fabric known as "Trade" and Broad cloth was introduced to Native Peoples, lengths of material were folded and sewn in half with a head hole cut mimicking the cut of buckskin dresses.

Every piece of fabric was utilized with full-length “gussets” inset into the sides of the fabric creating an extended hem to the sides of the dress which allowed for freedom of movement.

Dresses were traditionally ornamented as buckskin dresses with seashells, animal teeth and hair, feathers, and beads. “Fringe” was added with sewn on buckskin and eventually ribbons leading to the modern day “ribbon dress” worn by many Native American Tribes. Tribal affiliations are often displayed through jewelry, adornments, hair style and moccasins.
