Set of Three Antique Elementary School Reading Text Books

Book 1:
The Little Swiss Wood Carver by Movie Producer Madeline Brandeis
Photographic Illustrations made in Switzerland by Madeline Brandeis
1929 by A Flanagan Company, published by Grosset & Dunlap, USA
Endearing preface by Madeline Brandeis, a World Class mom.
This title page contains the statement of compliance with the wartime government regulations. (Interesting. You don't see that very often.)
160 pages, large print, grade 3 -5 reading level, charming early 20th century photographs.
Some writing between pg 7 and 26, torn corner pg 25.
Story of Seppi, a Swiss boy with a desire to learn the family business, wood carving.

While I expected to see much 21st century cultural political incorrectness in the content I did not. What I read was geographic, historic, and economic facts about the country of Switzerland and a personal view of the authors observations as she tells her story through the eyes of a child. I was blessed with Brandeis' Dedication, "To every child of every land, Little sister, little brother, As in this book you lives unfold, May you learn to love each other." Let's get this woman run for President? Quickly please!

Book 2:
Shaun O'Day of Ireland by Madeline Brandeis
Photographic Illustrations made in Ireland by Madeline Brandeis
1929 by A Flanagan Company, published by Grosset & Dunlap, USA
160 pages, large print, grade 3 -5 reading level, charming early 20th century photographs.
Student who wrote in "Little Swiss.." appears to have learned from getting his hand slapped with the ruler - no writing on the inside of this book, just a bit on the outer back cover. A small tear on page 15 is relatively minor for age and use of the book. This one is in quite nice condition for age.

The adventures of Shaun told with historic, geographic and cultural accuracy with a bit of fantasy and folk lore. As so with The Little Swiss Wood Carver, I found this book delightful. Wartime compliance statement and dedication as described in The Little Swiss Wood Carver.

Book 3:
Little Pepito of Central American by Gladys Shaw Erskine
Various credited photographic and artist rendition illustrations
Published in 1941 by Grosset & Dunlap, USA
Book begins with a 4 page Spanish dictionary.
191 pages in large print. Written in English . There are some translated Spanish words with pronunciation guides.
This is a story about a young boy from Costa Rica named Pepito. He meets people from other parts of the world at The Inn where his mother works. Again, fact and fantasy is combined into a sweet story of a delightful boy. Again, the authors content shows her love and respect of the people and place she is writing about.
While this book has the most flaws of the three book's exteriors (a bit more spine and cover scuffs and age spots) the interior of this book is quite nice. Very nice, in fact, the best of the three.

Overall, this is a unique set of books featuring delightful characters, interesting places and events, and a loving world perspective.
