Description

Hand crafted from polymer clay, this ornament portrays the serpent and forbidden fruit of Genesis 3 and would be a beguiling addition to any Jesse Tree collection or table-top tree. Because of it's miniature size (approximately 1-inch tall), it could present a choking hazard, so please monitor it's use with children. Please note that exact colors may vary slightly from the photograph as I hand mix clay in small batches to achieve custom colors.

More about the Jesse Tree tradition …

Birthed in an age of illiteracy when few individuals owned personal copies of the Holy Scriptures, the Jesse Tree, like other examples of church art, was used to portray Biblical concepts.

Before it appeared in other art forms, the Jesse Tree, based on Isaiah 11:1, illustrated Christ’s genealogy on the pages of 11th century psalters and altar Bibles. As time passed, artists added the prophets and Biblical heroes to the family tree as Jesus’ spiritual ancestors.

Today, the Jesse Tree has found renewed popularity. With an ornament and Scripture reading for each day of December, it vividly highlights God's hand throughout the Old Testament as He made way for the coming Messiah.

Additional policies

All Jesse Tree ornaments are made by hand with polymer clay in Portland, Oregon. They average an inch at their greatest dimension, depending on the orientation of the ornament. Example: Joseph's Tool's ornament is an inch wide and slightly less than an inch high. The figure ornaments are approximately one inch tall, obviously much narrower horizontally.

Please keep in mind that the ornament you receive may vary slightly from the photo listed. Each ornament is made individually, and I mix clay in small batches, so color and detail varies with each ornament, giving you a truly unique piece of art.

The complete set of Jesse Tree ornaments comes attractively wrapped and ready for gift-giving. If you would like an individual ornament or the nativity gift-wrapped, please add a note to me during check-out.

I have been asked if the ornaments are kid-friendly. Yes and no. My kids have handled our Jesse Tree ornaments for the last 5 years and they show little wear. In addition, I have dropped, bounced and thrown test-ornaments to see just how much they can withstand. They are surprisingly sturdy. That said, the ornaments are not made of plastic and will break if treated carelessly. Ornaments like the earth that have no protruding parts are strongest. Those like the stump of Jesse or the apple and snake, with small protruding parts, require a more gentle hand. Years ago, I had a dear older friend who made porcelain dolls for children. She found them to be a lovely tool to teach kids gentleness and appreciation for finery. I approach these ornaments with the same philosophy. Finally, monitor your children as they handle these small pieces. Their size presents a choking hazard.
