Description

Egg tempera painting in iron yellow, iron red, terra cotta, ancient green earth, brown, iron black, slate grey titanium white and purple ochre on 12.5" x 21.5" hardboard panel with rabbit skin glue gesso ground.

My goal in painting is to make something that won't grow wearisome on your wall as the years go by.

One way I do that is to pay attention to the kinesthetics of the strokes as I paint. If the strokes are visible in a painting we pick up more than lines of color we pick up a sense of the brush moving across the gesso, I think that makes a connection between the artist and the viewer. And I hope there is kind of a dance of colors as your eyes move across the painting.

Another way is to work for a spiritual or inexhaustible feeling between the shapes and the colors. that is a hard thing to put your finger on, and if you think you've got your finger on it then you loose it. So I try not to put my finger on it and instead I feel for it and try and hope. With this painting I have tried to conjure up that spiritual connection between people in the harmonies of color, the aggregation and disaggregation of the lines and shapes. Well, like I said, I feel for it, I try and I hope.

The last way I work for this connection through time is to try to make my paintings out of time tested materials. Egg tempera paintings are some of the oldest and best preserved, and from my research this gesso is an ideal surface for egg tempera. The recipe for this paint was simply egg yolk, water, a little vinegar, and ochre pigments which are among the most stable and long lasting of all pigments.

Sometimes when I finish a painting I feel pretty discouraged and confused about whether I have accomplished these things. I felt that at first with this painting but I had a sense that it would grow on me with time, and it has, so here it is.
